NY Times bestselling author S.E. Smith takes you into her ‘author cave’ #AuthorsInSpace, #PetsInSpace

By Susan Smith

There are many things I endeavor to do during my day – cleaning my office is not one of them. I live in a small house – the same one we purchased thirty-one years ago and raised four kids and an assortment of dogs, fish, turtles, lizards, and hamsters in. When the last of the kids moved out, Steve and I thought the house would be plenty big enough, after all, we had made it through three six foot five plus sons and a daughter.

Alas, as you can see in the photo, I was sadly mistaken. Steve and I are opposites in some ways which helps us be the perfect partner. While he is a minimalist, I tend to collect for the rainy days – or the apocalypse, I’m still trying to figure out which one. Regardless, if he needs something, I’ve got it! I took over the smallest bedroom as my office. I should have chosen the medium size room except I’ve overflowed into it as well.

I tend to collect and keep things that mean a lot to me. I am the keeper of the family photo albums that survived the devastating fire that killed my mom. I treasure the gifts I’ve received over the years from my kids, my students, and from readers. And I have a love for miniature houses which would get me in a LOT of trouble if I had a bigger house.

Each small artifact in my office is a piece of me. Yes, my desk looks like it has thrown up all over itself – I’ll get around to cleaning it when it gets too much. Until then, I’d rather be writing!

A novella in the Dragon Lords of Valdier series

Asim Kemark has lived a long, lonely life. It is only his pledge to his former king and to Mandra Reykill that keeps him, his dragon, and his symbiot from going crazy. He has given up on ever finding his true mate and devotes himself to caring for the wide assortment of creatures on Mandra and Ariel’s mountain retreat. The last thing he expects when he visits the palace is to lose control of his dragon and his symbiot when they sense their true mate. Before he knows it, he has kidnapped her!

Pearl St. Claire is enjoying a new adventure – learning to live on an alien planet. As a mature woman in her sixties, she thought she had experienced just about everything life could throw at her – only to discover she really hasn’t experienced anything yet! She is both amused and exasperated when one of the dragon-shifting aliens kidnaps her, believing she is his true mate.

Life is no longer boring or lonely as Asim courts the spirited human woman who has enchanted him, but he isn’t the only one who has noticed Pearl or the unusual animals under his care. When poachers attack, determined to steal the exotic creatures under his protection – including Pearl and a new clutch of alien eggs from Earth – he will do everything he can to protect them. Can one dragon keep the most precious creatures under his care safe, or will he lose the biggest battle of his life?

  2. Your office has lots of heart and soul, as do your books. Thank you so much for being part of our anthology!

  3. Jannie says:

Thank you for the look into Susan’s workspace. It seems to reflect the complex and varied worlds about which she writes.

    • Susan says:

Hi Jannie. Thank you! <3 It does have a lot of me. I've never thought of it the way you and Pauline have described it, but it is very much me. From the miniature houses to the California Raisins and Lego fantasy figures to all the items that remind me of my friends and family. It is very much who I am and what I write about. Hugs!!

  4. Cara Bristol says:

Susan, I’m so happy you shared your office with everyone today. I love seeing where other authors work, and getting a peek into their lives!

  5. Ah, I love your office. It looks cozy and homey and wonderful. I fear I’d spend a lot of my time playing with all the little raisins and fantasy figures though! 😀

  6. Denise says:

I think your office shows a glimpse of your soul, it shows warm, love and contentment which the world needs more of. No wonder you write such great stories.

  7. Leisha says:

Wow! Now I know where all your crazy ideas which magically transform into genius writing come from! That office is awesome! Full of surprises and warmth and love and humour – sounds like your books! Personally I don’t care if you wrote in a sterile pristine palace – as long as you write and publish <3

  8. The dancing raisins stood out because I remember when those commercials started and it was the funniest ever
