Reader’s Parlor: ‘Opinionated Woman’ Amaryllis Turman shares her love of reading

Reader’s Parlor is a weekly feature in which I interview readers about what they like to read. Please welcome today’s guest, Amaryllis Turman.

Cara: What do you like to read?

Amaryllis: I love romance novels and my favorite tropes are friends to lovers, Cinderella, and Beauty and the Beast (especially if he is a billionaire).

Cara: Why do you read? What do you enjoy most about reading?

Amaryllis: Reading has always been my favorite way to entertain myself. I love it so much because I create the accompanying visuals in my mind.

Cara: What do you love to see in a story? What are your pet peeves?

Amaryllis: I love to see diversity and complex character development. My pet peeve is when the plot romanticizes unhealthy relationship behaviors.

Cara: How do pick the books you read? What influences your decision to read a book? Where do you find out about new books?

Amaryllis: I subscribe to a lot of book blogs, newsletters, and follow my favorite authors on Facebook. I go through Amazon’s suggested book list regularly and a fancy cover might catch my attention. I prefer books in my favorite tropes, but I will read anything that piques my interest.

Cara: Do you share your love of reading with anyone? How?

Amaryllis: My blog’s title is “The Opinionated Woman’s Musings” because I love to share my opinions about the books I am reading with anyone who will listen. I am also in a book club with a group of women who love to read just as much as I do. It is great to get together and discuss our thoughts on the chosen book of the month.

Cara: When you’re not reading, what do you like to do?

Amaryllis: I spend a lot of time researching and educating the effects of essential oils on the body. Very interesting stuff!!! Plus, the hubby and I like to go camping and travel. That means I get to read in other locations. 🙂

Quick five:

Ebook, print or audiobook: Ebook

Your favorite place to read: My sofa wrapped in my snuggie

Number of books you read in a year: 120

A favorite childhood book: A Wrinkle in Time

A favorite romance trope: Beauty and the Beast

Amaryllis Turman bio

I am from a small town in Upstate SC. My mom taught me how to read when I was 3 and I have been hooked ever since. I am married to a wonderful guy and we have a cute little cat fur baby named Blaze. For my fulltime job, I work in Trade Compliance (means: a lot of research reading), but I am also a part-time blogger and essential oils educator.

Aw, thanks! Reader’s Parlor runs on Thursdays. Saturdays is Authors in Space, when authors show off their home offices (or wherever they write).
