Tips on buying Kindle ebooks from non Amazon sources…

Buying ebooks for Kindle from Amazon is easy. You go to the Amazon store on your Kindle, click ‘buy now,’ your ebook flies through cyberspace to your Kindle, and zippo, you bought a book. But you can also buy books almost as easily direct from ebook publishers and online ebook retailers. Why would you want to? Because often you get a better price (not always, but often). And sometimes you can get the newest releases faster from the publisher than from Amazon.

What you need to know is that the Kindle version from these etailers is listed as “mobipocket” and/or a .prc extension. It took me a while to figure that out. I used to buy the PDF and then have Amazon convert it. But if you buy .prc it’s already formatted for Kindle and you don’t have worry about any funky formatting that sometimes happens with conversions.

To buy from a publisher such or an ebook retailer log onto the respective website from your computer, pick your book and the format, pay for it with a credit card and then download it.

Now here’s something else I discovered recently. You can download an ebook direct to your Kindle from those sites. I used to download it to my computer hard drive, then move or drag it to my Kindle. But you can skip that step. All you need to do is attach your Kindle to your computer with the USB cord that you received with your Kindle (it doubles as the charger cord) BEFORE you click download.

Your Kindle “drive” will pop up on your computer. When you click download, the computer will ask you where you want to download the file to. Instead of sending it to your default Download folder or another folder on your desktop or laptop, click your Kindle “drive” and then click on “documents.” (Your ebooks are stored in your documents folder on Kindle). And zippo – you bought a book.

Here are a few of my favorite ebook publishers and sites:
