Guess who’s (not) coming to dinner…

When I interview other authors, I like to ask them five fun questions that have nothing to do with their books or writing. One question is, “if you could invite five famous people (dead or alive)  to dinner, who would they be?

I decided to answer the question myself.

It wasn’t easy. As I pondered my imaginary dinner guest list, I started to wonder how the different people would interact. Would one person monopolize the conversation? Would one topic dominate? Would they be open to satisfying my blatant curiosity (because that’s why I invited them)?

Then I realized I was over thinking the exercise because none of these people are coming my house (Reminds me of the time DH & I got into an argument about how we were going to the spend the lottery winnings we hadn’t won).

So here’s my guest list:

1. President Barak Obama. Make no assumption about my politics. Obama is the President of the United States. I’d want whoever the president was on my list. I have a lot of questions about my government and my country and want to talk to the top guy.

2. Donald Trump. I waffled between Microsoft’s Bill Gates, the richest man in the world, and Trump, a real estate magnate, who’s only moderately wealthy by comparison. But I want to talk to a rich guy. I want to learn their business secrets. Trump (at least on TV) seems personable (if arrogant) and that he’d be easy to talk to. So he trumped Gates.

3. Bethenny Frankel. I can hear you saying, “Who?” She’s a Bravo-TV reality star who started out on the Real Housewives of New York. BUT, she sold her Skinny Girl Margarita to Jim Beam for a boat load of cash and has since developed a business empire. I watch a lot of reality TV and am curious about filming and its intrusion into people’s lives. Bethenny is someone who used being a reality TV star to further her career, rather than making a career out of being on reality TV. I’m impressed by her drive and ambition.

4. E.L. James. Yep, the author of the Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy. Whether you loved or hated the books, they brought erotic fiction out of the closet and onto  bookstore endcaps. I think we could have a good conversation.

5. Hilary Clinton, the secretary of state and former first lady of the United States. I think she has a very sharp mind. At this point in time, Secretary of State is one of the highest ranking positions a woman has attained in this country (with Speaker of the House of Representatives and Supreme Court Justice being the others).

On my B list were: Ronald Reagan, Oprah, Bill Gates,  Nora Roberts, Michelle Obama, George Clooney, Gloria Steinem, Princess Diana, Monica Lewinsky, Tamra Barney (Real Housewives of Orange County) and JK Rowling.
