Kinkier than Cosmo ever thought of being…

While I was stranded in the grocery checkout line, the October 2013 Cosmo magazine cover caught my eye. “12 Kinky Quickies. Grab Him & Get it On” I scanned the article on quick ways to spice up one’s sex life and realized the characters in my erotic romances have done most of what Cosmo recommends (and then some):

  1. “Get Freaky and Festive.” Don a costume for a little role play. In my free short story Halloween with the Headmaster, Hallie does exactly that.
  2. “Try Some Invisible Bondage.” Order your lover to remain motionless while you ravish him/her. So far my characters have preferred actual bondage. Melania is bound to a spanking bench in Unexpected Consequences and Dana ties Lon to the bed in Reckless in Moonlight.
  3.  “Make the most of your lunch break.” In Intimate Submission, my very first erotic romance, after a job interview Jamie Douglass goes to lunch with her would-be boss and ends up in the sack.
  4. “Wear your kinkiness on your sleeve.” This refers to using clothing you might be wearing to engage in kink. Dana in Reckless in Moonlight uses one of Lon’s own neckties to tether him to the bed. In Disciplinary Measures, Linc uses his belt to spank his wife Regina.
  5. “Take it Outside.” Aka public sex. I think my characters invented this one. They are quite the exhibitionists. Dana in Reckless in Moonlight masturbates in her swimming pool while Lon watches from the tree house next door. They also get it on on her front porch. Mark and Stephanie of Body Politics have sex outside a spanko bar and outside a donut shop. Jack and Morgan of Secret Desires make out on top of the car in a parking garage.
  6. “Evoke his Blind Ambition.” Blindfold your lover. Dan blindfolds Emma in False Pretenses for a little spanky-spanky play.
  7. “Keep Oh So Quiet.” Cosmo suggests having sex without uttering a sound. None of my characters have been able to do this yet.
  8. “Make it Stop Watch Sexy” Get off quick by using a vibe. My characters don’t use a lot of vibrators. Butt plugs, on the other hand…
  9. “Use the Tools of Another Trade”. Use common household implements for fun and games. De rigueur for my characters. Wooden spoons are used in Unexpected Consequences and Body Politics. A hairbrush in False Pretenses. A ruler in Halloween with the Headmaster.
  10. “Be Dirty While Getting Clean.” Dan and Emma have sex in the shower in False Pretenses. Jack, Morgan and Matt take their ménage into the shower in Secret Desires.
  11. “Rev Your Engine.” Or as I like to call it, park and ride. See item number 5.
  12. “Master Multi-tasking.” As Cosmo puts it, continue your business while he’s “giving you the business.” One of my all-time favorite scenes is in Reckless in Moonlight when Dana attempts to discuss media relations with her boss on the phone while Lon “gives her the business.”

  1. Invisible bondage? Why would anyone want to do that? It’s like invisible chocolate… pretty poor when compared with the real thing! Cosmo could learn a thing or two from your books… 😉

Basically, it’s hang onto the headboard and don’t let go. I have read this in other erotic romance novels, but not mine.

  2. I laughed as I read this list. Apparently my characters are far kinkier than even I gave them credit for. Never thought I would consider Cosmo tame. Not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing…

I’m reading your book, Impact (Buckin’ Bull Riders 1). Your characters are way kinkier than Cosmo. In a good way.

  3. Casey McKay says:

“Keep Oh So Quiet” ??? How is that fun? Normally that is just a necessity in some cases, otherwise, why bottle it up?

Cute post, Cara! I love your kinky characters 🙂

  4. Sue Lyndon says:

I bet everyone standing around you thought you were double checking your grocery list. LOL. Fun post. I love that your characters are kinkier than Cosmo!

    • Cara Bristol says:

LOL, Sue. I was scribbling the 12 tips & jotting the titles that applied to each one. The grocery line was seriously slow. I was afraid my Popsicles were going to melt before I got out of there.

  5. Tara Finnegan says:

I particularly like invisible bondage as a concept, as the bonds are in your mind and its an act of obedience and submission to behave as if tied when you’re actually free.

    • Cara Bristol says:

You’re right, Tara. That was Cosmo’s explanation. Although in the article the woman was supposed to order the man to remain still!

  6. Great post, Cara. Were you able to take the notes w/o buying that magazine? Even better!

P.S. Hope the popsicles were ok.

    • Cara Bristol says:

I thought about buying the magazine, and if the line had moved faster, I would have. But it gave me enough time to jot down all 12 tips.

I think the Popsicles survived. DH hasn’t said otherwise (they were for him).

  7. S. J. Maylee says:

What a fun way to revisit your books. Very entertaining. My characters have done many on this list, but not all. I have some work to do, lol.

  8. Kayla Lords says:

I don’t think I could write a “safe for Cosmo” kink article if my life depended on it – not now. I have a feeling I (along with several others I know) would scandalize everyone… and I’m ok with that. 🙂
