Spring might have officially begun on March 20, but the weather did not cooperate with the calendar. But now, mid-April, in my neck of the world, things are warming up. The temperature has warmed into the 70s (about 23 C), the grass has greened, the trees are budding, and the birds are singing again.
Last week for the first time this year I wore shorts!
I’ve begun “summerizing” the house. A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I used the last of the firewood that was stacked on the patio and did not replace it. I cleaned out the fireplace for the last time. The windows are open to draw in fresh air. The central heat is off and the air conditioner has yet to be turned on.
The yard has been sprayed for weeds, sprinklers will soon come on, windows will be washed.
And I bought new patio furniture.
In the evening after I’ve quit writing and before dinner, my husband and I like to sit on the patio with a glass of wine, catch up on the day’s activities and take in the outdoors. For the first time ever we have a house that faces in the “right” direction enabling us to comfortably enjoy the patio any time of day. In other houses, our patios/decks faced west, which meant we received full and direct sun during the late afternoon/early evening when we most wanted to sit outside.
So, we greatly appreciate the usability of the current one.
We used to have two cushioned wooden Adirondack chairs, but during the winter, my husband accidentally dropped a log on the arm of one of them and broke it. So we were down to a single chair – and we’d had no place for guests to sit unless we bought out folding chairs.
So I invested in a “conversation set” composed of a loveseat, two chairs, and a coffee table.
We took the set for a test drive over the weekend. We pronounced it good.
Next up: a replacement barbecue.
What do you do to prepare for spring and summer?
