An interview with Katherine Deane on the The Coach’s Discipline

coachsdiscipline coverIt takes discipline to run a marathon–sometimes the domestic discipline kind. Today I have Katherine Deane with her second book and first solo, The Coach’s Discipline. Katherine has been a great support to many spanking romance authors and especially to me (she’s on my Street Team) so it’s my pleasure to see her come out with her own spanking fiction!

Cara Bristol: I understand that you love to run. Tell us about that? How long have you been doing it? How often do you run? What’s the farthest you’ve ever run? Have you ever done a marathon?

Katherine Deane: Ooh, one of my favorite past times! I’ve been a runner for most of my life, ever since my middle school P.E. teacher discovered I could run a mile without keeling over. (He gave me a donut as a reward!)

Before I had my children, I ran every day, with the occasional double during longer race seasons. My longest has been the marathon. I was actually training for an Olympic Trials qualifier when I had my big accident, and then had kids (so I won’t complain about the accident. 🙂

I’ve run two so far, and would love to get back into it again, now that my kids are a bit more self sufficient. 🙂

Cara Bristol: Did your story idea for Coach’s Discipline come while running? Did you plot it out while running? What inspired the idea?

Katherine Deane: LOL, the first time I thought of the story, I was knee deep in stories from the Discipline and Desire website. (great quick stories there if you like DD!). After a few weeks of laziness, I started a fantasy of a “coach” who would spank me to help me get back into shape. 🙂

Unfortunately, I couldn’t figure out a way to make THAT into a full romance story, so I just used it as “get out of bed at 6 am and run” fuel.  But then some of my past issues crept into my mind, and bam! The real story went from there.

Cara Bristol: Tell us a little about the story.

Katherine Deane: Ok, I’ll be honest. When I first started the story a few years ago, the MC, Claire was used for me to work through some of my own needs for closure, and fantasies about being pushed that extra mile. Claire is a 32 year old competitive runner, at the peak of her abilities, who just can’t find the right formula to achieve her goals – the Olympic Trials in the Marathon. (This has always been my goal as well J ) Between past issues of harmful bad habits, and some tough role models, she has turned to  self sabotage.

That’s where Nick, the awesome coach who kicks ass and doesn’t apologize for it, comes in.  His job is to help her see past her insecurities and self doubt, and to help her to not be her own worst enemy.

Cara Bristol: I love the concept of the story, that a marathoner might need a little extra motivation. What made you want to write domestic discipline?

Katherine Deane: I think domestic discipline wasn’t even a question for me. I love the concept of DD in all the stories that run through my head. I like the “strong male leading the way” dynamic- as long as he isn’t an *ss!

Cara Bristol: What comes first for you—the spanking or the story? Meaning, do you develop a story idea/plot and add spanking to it or come up with a spanking scenario and then develop a plot that supports it?

Katherine Deane: hehe, I can add a spanking to any scene that runs through my head. (I had a delightful one remaking a bunch of scenes from The Sound of Music a few months ago! 😉 ) But in answer to your question, I am huge plot / idea person. I like to have a fun story with lots of interesting characters first. And then when the timing is right, the spankings (hopefully) fit naturally.

Cara Bristol: What is your writing process/style?

Katherine Deane: Oh my Lord! This changes for me every few weeks! Last year, I was sure I was a pantser! Then I remembered how stinking type A and control freakish I am. ( I like to plan back up contingencies for all my plans on my lists. My husband calls is worrying. 🙂

Now I am in between plotting and pantsing, and write wherever I can find 30-50 minutes of quiet, because of little people being on summer break. After the fall, I hope to start in with morning writing again- when I am fresh from exercise and coffee.

Cara Bristol: What makes spanking hot?

Katherine Deane: um, everything!?! No, seriously. The sounds- the different descriptions of the sounds of bare flesh meeting bare flesh, echoing throughout the room, her muffled cries getting louder and more intense.

The visual- the wonderful colors streaking over a firm round bottom as it wiggles back and forth trying to escape the implement being used.

The fight or flight moment- when she goes from flailing arms and kicking and hollering to finally just submitting to it.

And the tears. The visual and sound of this awesome release that comes from the period of crying. (That was probably weird, but I feel so much better when I have a huge cry. It doesn’t usually happen during spankings, though L )

Cara Bristol: Who are you when you’re not writing?

Katherine Deane: I’m an almost 42 year old stay at home mom, runner (If my back will cooperate, I hope to start competing again soon ), knitter, seamstress, singer, and dog lover – who now owns two kittens, and is trying to figure out why they like me so much. I am also in a DD relationship with my husband, and am ok finally, with admitting, that I am in fact, a Spankophile. 🙂

Quick Five:

Your favorite food: Chocolate

A food you can’t stand: liver and onions eeew!

If you could invite to dinner five famous people (dead or alive) who would you invite? Jr Ward, JK Rowling, JRR Tolkien, Sean Connery and Laura Ingles Wilder.

Other than a cellphone, what is something you always carry with you? Chapstick (I reapply every ten minutes or so)

And an excerpt!

He smirked as he pulled her up, and took her position on the towel, straightening his legs. “You. Do. Me.”

Her cheeks heated, and  she tried to slow her breathing as she reached for him. She carefully placed her hand on his right leg, above the knee, and pressed down lightly. His legs were so muscular and hard. She had to work hard to keep her breathing even, and her face professional.  This was her coach, not some man to lust after because he had a few muscles.

Then he raised and straightened his left leg.  Oh my god, when his shorts raised up just below his rear end, she thought she would faint. The man had tremendous muscle tone, perfectly tight hamstrings running into heavenly gluteals.  She started massaging his hamstring, as she held above the knee and pressed into him, using her body weight to ease him into a deeper stretch.

How low could she rub?  His hamstrings were pretty tight after all. She licked her lips and watched the movement of his shorts.  If they moved up a little bit more—

“Not too fast, Claire. You don’t want to hurt me.” He groaned.

“Sorry,” she mumbled, and let off the weight.

“Now, massage, lightly.”

She couldn’t quite reach him, so she placed her leg in-between both of his.

When he gave her an odd look, she said, “I thought it would be easier if I straddled you. But you’re kind of wide. Would you prefer me to come from behind?”

The women snickered, and Nick’s eyebrows rose over his sunglasses.

She felt her cheeks heat, “I, I mean, I can’t get enough strength behind my push, and I don’t want to accidentally fall and injure you.”

She thought saw a hint of a grin, when he replied. “You can straddle me if you need to.”

Great interview. My dad was a track and cross country coach. So, I’ve been around runners all my life. I however didn’t start running until a couple years ago. It sure is a great activity for getting some thinking done.
