From Warrior (Breeder 3)….and then he spoils it!

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000040_00014]Isn’t it just like a man to say the wrong thing?

Welcome to Saturday Spankings and Weekend Writing Warriors, two weekend blog hops in which authors present eight-sentences excerpts from their work. Mine is from Warrior, a science fiction romance, available on Amazon, BN and All Romance ebooks.

In this scene, Urazi and Anika are on the run from the bad guys. They’ve been hiking all day. Urazi speaks first:

“You have not complained nor hindered our travel. You are strong.” His words and nod of approval lit a glow within her until he spoiled it by adding, “For a female.”

“You are perceptive,” she snapped, an uncharacteristic temper rising. “For a male.”

Urazi frowned. “I have praised you, but I sense you are annoyed with me.”

Now for some important news! First, I have a NEW blurb for Warrior:

Between war and duty, they find love…

On a planet where women are chattel, Anika is to be delivered to become the mate of an Alpha Commander. Secretly in love with another, she is unable to accept the arrangement and flees. Bound by his duty, her lover Urazi intended to bring her back to fulfill her function. But war intervenes, and as their planet fights a desperate battle against a villainous despot, Anika and Urazi become united in their determination to save their people. But with their lives on the line, the love they share may become the biggest risk of all.

Warrior, the third book in the Breeder sci-fi romance series, can be read as a stand-alone.

Remember: Tuesday, November 4 is the deadline to post a review of Warrior on Amazon and enter the drawing for a $75 Amazon gift certificate. Details here.

  1. Sometimes even warriors just don’t get it do they? Great snippet Cara 🙂

  2. Jane says:

Oh, dear. Methinks he senses correctly! I wonder how he will make it up to her? Jane xxx

  3. Great dialogue but he has REALLY put his foot in it. Now I want to know how this rupture repairs. Great work. 🙂

  4. I don’t remember the original blurb – I’m not sure I even read it before just picking up the book! That says something about the author I think 🙂 I do like this new blurb but I have to tell you that I’m stressed reading this book! I keep telling Anika (like Urazi) to stay put and she just doesn’t and it’s stressing me out a little bit. You can see this is all going to come to a (huge) head but man oh man, I keep thinking ‘oh no…just…don’t do that!’ I feel like you just kept pushing yourself on this one. It’s really a captivating story.

    • Cara Bristol says:

Thank you, Natasha. Since I’m the author, I may be a bit biased, BUT, I think Warrior is the best of the Breeder book. Breeder was good, Terran was better, and Warrior is the best. I did push myself on Warrior. The risks and stakes are huge, but the payoff at the end is all the more sweet for it.

  5. PK Corey says:

Men on whatever planet can be so thick sometimes. This is a truly great book.

  6. Leigh Smith says:

    Wow, he is perceptive!!! 🙂

  7. S.J. Maylee says:

Ha! I remember loving her even more for that “For a male” comment. 🙂 Such an awesome series.

  8. Yes and then to have no clue what he said to offend. Men, you gotta love ’em. What choice do we have??? Nice snip, Cara

    • Bruce Stern says:

Some of us get it right the first time; some of us make the egregious error, but quickly realize and correct our social and personal ineptitude; some of us need many mistakes before we fix the problem, and we can stop inserting foot in mouth; and, some of us never get it. (No woman in her right mind, or left mind, would ever want to be with that last fellow, right?)
Many of us don’t do it out of disrespect or condescension, but what I’m sure is a biologically hardwired process that may take generations (God/Goddess forbid) to correct, but we’re trying, while we’re keeping the home’s rainwater runoff gutters clear, raking the yard, and weatherproofing all the windows and doors.
Then again, if the woman knows the man—that he’s a caring, loving, compassionate, thoughtful, understanding fellow who can fix the plumbing, change the oil, handle a flogger and paddle, and pamper his woman regularly, and without prompting—but occasionally misspeaks, then I’m sure she would forgive him.
Most of the preceding was typed with tongue in cheek. 🙂

  9. Mary Wehr says:

LOL, Cara, typical male, open mouth insert foot 🙂 Gotta love em.

  10. Bruce Stern says:

Gosh darn it! That’s just a guy, isn’t it?! But, a real man is more aware, more socially adept, more respectful, regardless of what planet he calls home. 😉

  11. It’s so typical of a man to do that. But her response was great!!

  12. Sheri Savill says:

Love the snappy interplay between them, Cara. Sharp!

  13. Gem Sivad says:

Perfect insight into the dynamics of these two. LOVE the book. I’m way behind on reviews but this is on my 5 star list to post soon. 🙂

    • Cara Bristol says:

I know how that goes! I get behind on my reviews too. Remember: if you post your review by Tuesday, Nov. 4 (midnight) you can enter the Warrior Reader Contest for a chance to win a $75 Amazon gift card.

  14. Gemma Parkes says:

This relationship is going to keep throwing up challenges! He has so much to learn!

  15. Yeah, those backhanded or qualified compliments can sucker-punch you, huh? Methinks they might have a bit of a culture gap. Thanks for sharing, great to see you again.

  16. A classic little gem of a scene – love it! Great excerpt…

  17. Wow!! Men can really stick their foot in their mouths. My husband did it last night. Urazi is really starting to grow me, despite his imperious attitude. 🙂 Can’t wait for next weeks snippet. 🙂

  18. Kate Corcino says:

Great snippet! He put his foot in it, for sure. Love the blurb!

  19. Men just don’t get it, do they? LOL Great eight!

  20. Tina Christopher says:

Lol, I love their interactions and the way he tries to understand. Poor Urazi;).

  21. Caitlin says:

Well, since women are so obviously weak and useless, he just *has* to qualify his praise. If she bothers explaining it, I somehow doubt he’ll get it. Maybe he’ll come around eventually….

  22. oh so Venus and Mars…love it!

  23. Joelle Casteel says:

silly male 😀 love the snip

  24. Meka James says:
