April 16, 2010 I published my first blog on WordPress.com. Today–four years, eight months later–I’m self-hosted on GoDaddy.com, and I publish my 1000th blog.
As promised, it’s time to announce the winner of the $10 Amazon gift card (that’s 1000 without the decimal point). This person was selected by random drawing from among visitors who commented between Nov. 10, 2014, when I announced the drawing, and yesterday, my 999th blog. During that period, I received 178 comments on various blog posts.
The winner of the $10 Amazon gift card is: Katherine Deane!
Blogging highlights and stats:
April 16, 2010 I started blogging on WordPress.com. (You can see my first blog here). That first year, I published 63 blog posts. This year so far, I’ve published 259 blogs! I’ve gotten a tad more prolific in 4 1/2 years.
August 2, 2010 My Bottom Smarts gave my blog a huge boost in traffic when Bonnie listed my blog as spanking-friendly. Blog hits shot up from about 20 a day to a high of 350. That was my first big tie-in to the spanking community, and the inspiration for Unexpected Consequences, a domestic discipline romance, and the book “that put me on the map.”
January 8, 2011 I acquired my own domain, carabristol.com, and self-hosted my blog on GoDaddy.com.
October 2012 My blog achieved a new milestone with 100,000 visitors for the year (Jan-Oct). By December of 2012, carabristol.com garnered 150,000 page views for the year.
May 29, 2013 I did something I’d never done before. I ran a substantial excerpt from an unedited WIP in a brand new genre. Before this time, it was my personal policy to not run unedited excerpts. But doing so introduced Breeder to the world, and I believe, played a large part in the success of the book. (Another part of its success was the huge support I received from the author community) Breeder has since surpassed Unexpected Consequences as my most successful (profitable) book to date.
September 2013 I had 10,000 visitors in a single month for the first time.
April 9, 2014 I added a widget to allow visitors to sign up to receive email notification of my blog posts. (It’s in the sidebar!)
May 22, 2014 “Why some books sell and others don’t” became my most popular blog post ever with 2,384 hits that day (without being “chrossed”) and 95 comments (about half were my responses to comments). Between that blog, and the next day’s on promotion, tips learned from RT, I doubled my number of blog subscribers to 200. Due to those two blogs, I ended the month with 14,167 visits and 21,409 page views.
July 28, 2014 Melissa Weeks posted the 10,000th comment on my blog!
December 11, 2014 The 1000th blog!
What’s next? Well, I expect that late in 2015, I will get my 500,000th visitor, and possibly my 1 millionth page view. When that happens, of course, there will be a prize!
But, I realize 259 blogs in a year (and the year isn’t over yet) is WAY too much, even though some posts were guest blogs I didn’t write. A good number were weekend snippet hops. For a while I posted a different excerpt for Saturday Spankings and Weekend Writing Warriors, I’ve since started posting one blog for both.
Time spent blogging is time not spent writing books. And my 200 blog subscribers probably don’t want to receive 5 emails a week from me. So in 2015, I plan to taper off a bit. I may have to go to Bloggers Anonymous.
