Friday Faves is a weekly blog feature in which I present two of my favorite things. One item is personal, and the other is publishing industry related (but no promo. Friday Faves is promo-free zone). Expect to learn a little more about me as I share personal photos and anecdotes.
This week’s personal fave is….coloring books for adults.
If you haven’t heard, adult coloring books are the new trend. It couldn’t have come at a better time for me. Several months ago, I got to thinking how much I loved to color as a kid and got the urge to do it again. I was on the verge of buying a kid’s coloring book (but I thought my husband would think I was nuts), when I saw a segment on the TV news about adult coloring books. I ran to my computer and bought one from Amazon. But you can find them all over…Walmart, Walgreens, Books-A-Million, Michaels.
Coloring books for adults are much more detailed than kids’ coloring books. Instead of crayons, you use gel pens or colored pencils. I thought I would like gel pens because of the variety of colors and effects (metallic, neon, sparkly, etc.), but I actually prefer plain old colored pencils because you can blend colors and lighten or darken by how hard you press. With gel pens, you get what you get.
Which leads to what I really like about coloring…
I love playing with color and seeing the picture come alive. I scanned some of my favorites to show you. I didn’t want to tear them from the book, so they’re a little skewed and the photos don’t do the colors justice at all. The colors aren’t nearly as vibrant in the photos as they are in the actual “drawing.”
This one is my No 1 favorite. I “practiced” on other pictures before I started this one because I didn’t want to ruin it.
A couple of flower pictures. I like coloring flowers.
Although I like flowers the best, doing “swirly” patterns is pretty fun:
As I said, the patterns can get really detailed. Here’s one that is too detailed. Coloring this would be more work than fun.
This weeks publishing fave is… Book Bub’s Marketing Tips Blog
You’ve probably heard of Book Bub as the discounted book promo site that is practically guaranteed to rocket your book to top of the charts (It worked for me. I had a 99-cent Book Bub deal for Irresistible Attractions and it ranked at No. 165 overall and was No. 1 erotica BDSM.) What you may not know is that Book Bub’s “Partner’s Blog” offers great marketing tips for authors. Recent topics have included:
- 9 website trends for authors
