#8Sunday: Self-recriminations after the heave-ho…From Captured by the Cyborg

Captured_600x900

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there!

This might be the last week that I excerpt from Captured by the Cyborg. Friday I finished the first draft of the next Cy-Ops Sci-fi Romance, Trapped with the Cyborg, and I have a cover and a blurb(Click for a peek)! Depending on how far I get with revisions this week, I may begin excerpting from that.

But anyway, this weekend, we’re still focusing on Captured. What you couldn’t tell from last week’s post was that after a midnight tryst in the observatory, Illumina told Dale she didn’t want to continue that kind of relationship. The aftermath of the heave-ho…

She wouldn’t even tell him her real name.

He had only himself to blame. Within minutes of meeting her, he’d known she was using an alias and had falsified credentials. That she turned out to be a crackerjack programmer and troubleshooter didn’t count. She’d lied about everything—and he’d offered her a position anyway! What kind of an idiot hired a job applicant who lied?

Nor could he leave it there. Oh, no. He had proceeded to have sex with her. “Don’t fuck the staff.” Wasn’t that rule no. 1 in any business?

Sometimes the biggest risk is to one’s heart….

An ex-Cyber Operations field agent, Dale Homme has kissed danger and betrayal more times than he cares to count. Now he runs a clandestine factory beneath the surface of the moon Deceptio, where confidentiality and security matter more than anything. When a beautiful young woman arrives seeking a job, Dale knows within minutes she’s lying. Everything about her is false: her past, the people she claims to know, her reason for being on Deceptio. Illumina Smith? Even her name is an alias.

Logic says send her packing. His gut says she’s in trouble. She needs him. So he’ll do anything to keep her safe….even if it means keeping her captive.

Captured by the Cyborg is third in the Cy-Ops Sci-fi Romance series but is written to be read as a stand-alone novella.

  1. I really liked this scene in the book. His self doubt, his self-admonishment, and yet,his utter helplessness at how his feeling had already gotten away from him. 🙂

  2. Ah yes, sometimes we know it’s wrong and do it anyway- dang feelings! Hope he recovers from this!

  3. Love, love, love this episode. You are a wonder in you category.

  4. He might have to try a “heart to heart” talk instead of sex!

  5. Botanist says:

Good questions, but from the description of the operation he’s running here, I’d have thought being able to lie well was a prime job requirement! Maybe he shouldn’t beat himself up too much.

  6. Wow, that looks like he started on a pretty wrong foot. Now what can get worse?

  7. Poor Dale, he’s really gotten himself into a tough situation, with only himself to blame. Excellent excerpt though, really illustrates his dilemma!

  8. LOL! Yup, he broke rules 1 and 2, screwing staff and hiring them knowing they’re lying. He’ll pay some consequences, no doubt, and at least he has the sense to know it!! Great bit of inner monologue here. 🙂

  9. From this passage, she sounds a lot more like a capturer than a capturee.

    • Cara Bristol says:

The capture part comes later in the story. Maybe I’ll share that one next week. Make it my last snippet…

  10. T. M. Hunter says:

Usually the best rule to stick to, honestly…

  11. Dang those pesky impulses! Someone please pass the sizzle…

  12. Jenna Jaxon says:

I know rules are made to be broken, but Jeeze, breaking all of them can’t win you many brownie points. The question is, can he straighten this mess out?

  13. He’s just breaking all his rules, isn’t he? Might as well double down…

  14. Amy Braun says:

This snippet is fantastic! I absolutely love the last paragraph. Also, the new cover and blurb are great! Nice work!
