Pets in Space

Something new for Weekend Writing Warriors! I’m excerpting from my story, Spark of Attraction from the Pets In Space anthology, to be released October 11. Let’s begin at the beginning with the opening lines of the story:

“What’s the status on the colonists?” Dante asked Lieutenant Commander Lucille Brack when she strode onto the bridge.

“Eleven hundred and fifty-nine perished in the Tyranian attack,” his first officer replied. “Two hundred twelve were rescued from the planet’s surface.”

“We’re sure that’s all of them?”

“Yes, a bio scan has identified all humans, both alive and deceased.”

“How are the survivors doing?”

“Some are handling it well, but others—” Brack shook her head. “They’re traumatized, sir.”

“They never should have been on Verde Omega to start with.”

Memory: intact. Cognitive function: enhanced. Emotion: erased. After becoming a cyborg, Captain Dante Stone didn’t think he’d ever feel again, until a traumatized young woman and a ball of synthetic fur named Sparky helped him to love.

  1. Such a tense situation to start out. But, the fact there are survivors is a plus. Love this story! Looking forward to the anthology. 🙂

  2. He sounds like he’ll be hard to crack. Never read a cyborn romance before, but I do love seeing emotionless, bad*sses fall in love 🙂

  3. Sounds like quite a catastrophe…and the first officer isn’t a very empathic guy.

  4. I agree with Ed. What a shmo. Your top guy is right on along with a marvelous heroine.

  5. Marcia says:

Oh he’s got quite the attitude, doesn’t he! Great opening, immediately makes me want to know what happened and where this is all going. Best of luck with the anthology!

As a moderator though, I need to ask you to please make that photo of the WeWriWa logo into a working link back to our home page, or please add a link in the post. Thanks very much and thanks for being a long-time participant! 🙂

  6. Sounds like it will be a great story – and for a great cause too. Love the model for Sparky. Is it yours?

  7. Amy Braun says:

Well he’s not very chipper. But I like the snippet (and the puppy pic!).

  8. How tense…and he’s not very sympathetic to their tragic plight! But I’ve a feeling Mr. Sourpants is going to get all warm and fuzzy before the end. I LOVE the idea of this story (and the anthology)!! Great snippet. 🙂

  9. Now you’ve got me wondering why they shouldn’t have been on the planet.

  10. No one can resist a melting when a pet is involved, should be very interesting to watch him thaw.

  11. Those are some terrible numbers on the survivors. Seems like a bad place to be. But it’s not nice to blame the victims.
