Photo op! “Inside a view window” of the International Space Station

In August a friend and I went to a weekend adult Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala. Space Camp is part science lab, part “summer camp,” part museum, and a little bit of an amusement park. It’s very hands-on; they keep you busy all day. We were on the go from 7:30 a.m. until 9:30 p.m.

Among the activities, we:

  • Experienced the disorientation of the Multi-Axis Trainer (You can watch a video of me on the trainer on Facebook or Instagram)
  • Experienced 1/6 gravity of the moon
  • Listened to presentations from astronauts and others in the space program
  • Built a heat shield (to protect an egg from a blow torch)
  • Built rockets from kits and shot them off
  • Participated in role play missions as astronauts, scientists and mission control personnel
  • Visited on site museums
  • Took a virtual reality trip to the moon!
  • Engaged in leadership “team building” exercises.

I hope you enjoy some of these photos. Some are mine, most were taken by Lisa Medley, my friend and Space Camp buddy.

Several Space Camp alumni who attended as kids have gone on to become astronauts!
The 4th floor “habitat” area where we stayed.
Our bunks — before we messed them up. Always a take photo first!
Inside one of the control rooms. We did a couple of role play mission simulations. In one, I was” PayCom,” Payload Communications Manager, responsible for communication with the International Space Station astronaut crew for scientific experiments.
Part of the ISS (International Space Station) set.
Inside another set. The “space camper” in the foreground looked like he was about 16 years old to me. I sat next to him at lunch one day. He’s actually 31, and was very knowledgeable about the space program and astrophysics.
Just playing around!
Real space suits in one of the museums.
An actual moon rock.
We built rockets from kits and shot them off.
One of the team-building challenges. It was a lot of fun, and one of my favorite activities of Space Camp. In this challenge, we had to figure out how to cross a small field without touching the ground. It was fairly easy for us, because we were all open to suggestion, but in a workplace setting where coworkers didn’t get along, this would be a difficult challenge.
Went to Space Camp, got a T-shirt. Lisa Medley and me.
That’s all folks!

You really should check out the short Multi-Axis Training video on Facebook or Instagram. It was a kick in the butt! Turn the sound up so you can hear me scream.

Thanks for asking me. It wouldn’t have been on my radar screen, if you hadn’t brought it to my attention. Or is radar old tech? Lol.

I had a great time. One of the things I learned was I need a phone that takes better pictures. Lol. Lisa’s phone took much better photos.

  5. How fun, Cara! Thanks for the look at Space Camp. I’ve always wondered about the experience. Great post!
