Coming October 11, 2017

The Crimson Hawk, a military space battleship, has rescued a group of colonists who were attacked by aliens. The vessel’s captain Dante Stone intends to pay the refugees a visit. His first officer suggests that he might not be the best person to do that. In this snippet, Dante admits to himself that she might be right…

His cyborg brain excelled at military strategy, logic, and analysis. Hand-holding and hugs? Not so much. He’d never been a touchy-feely people person, and after his transformation to cyborg following a critical injury early in his military career, the emotions he did have had calcified. Cybermed doctors had assured him the microchip brain implant and the robotic nanocyte infusion wouldn’t change him, but they had. He’d awakened from surgery with memories intact, cognitive function enhanced, but emotions all but erased.

He’d become like his name: Dante Stone.

Focused, driven, single-minded in execution of duty.

What friends and civilians perceived as a lack, his military superiors viewed as an asset.

Poor, poor Dante. He has no idea what’s in store for him…

Even an alien needs a pet…

  1. Dante definitely needs a pet. Probably a golden retriever.

  2. Amy Braun says:

Cool name, but I sense that the “stony” part of him will soften when he leasts expects it. 😉

    • Cara Bristol says:

Thank you. I was stuck for a name, so I had a little contest on FB to name him. He was named by two other authors. One suggested the name Stone. The other suggested Dante.

  3. What a guy and an interesting story going on. Terrific, Cara.

  4. Jenna Jaxon says:

What a cute premise for a collection! And I can’t wait for Dante to become less stony. 🙂 A ball of synthetic fur, huh? Wonderful snippet to set it all up!

  5. A robotic nanocyte infusion sounds like a pretty serious operation. Let’s hope that his emotions can make their way back from that. Good stuff.

  6. Diane Burton says:

Can’t wait to see what/who softens his hard heart. Nice snippet.

  7. Ah, yeah…I’ll bet the right combo of cute pet and love interest will spark those emotions again!

  8. Oh, I love Dante Stone! Sometimes the tougher they are, the harder they fall. 🙂

  9. He’s the ideal warrior, but of course, someone or some dog will light a spark of emotion in him.

  10. Ouch, he does need a pet. What a fantastic premise! Love it!

  11. Someone has to be wrong–him or the doctors. Since people can do remarkable things to try to protect themselves, I’m leaning towards him being wrong.

  12. I LOVE Dante! This was such a terrific story 🙂 Excellent excerpt today to get people started…

  13. I can see it now, the “stone” is going to melt, I like it already.
