April 16, 2010 I published my first blog on WordPress.com. Today–four years, eight months later–I’m self-hosted on GoDaddy.com, and I publish my 1000th blog.

As promised, it’s time to announce the winner of the $10 Amazon gift card (that’s 1000 without the decimal point). This person was selected by random drawing from among visitors who commented between Nov. 10, 2014, when I announced the drawing, and yesterday, my 999th blog. During that period, I received 178 comments on various blog posts.

The winner of the $10 Amazon gift card is: Katherine Deane!

Blogging highlights and stats:

April 16, 2010 I started blogging on WordPress.com. (You can see my first blog here). That first year, I published 63 blog posts.  This year so far, I’ve published 259 blogs! I’ve gotten a tad more prolific in 4 1/2 years.

August 2, 2010 My Bottom Smarts gave my blog a huge boost in traffic when Bonnie listed my blog as spanking-friendly. Blog hits shot up from about 20 a day to a high of 350. That was my first big tie-in to the spanking community, and the inspiration for Unexpected Consequences, a domestic discipline romance, and the book “that put me on the map.”

January 8, 2011 I acquired my own domain, carabristol.com, and self-hosted my blog on GoDaddy.com.

October 2012 My blog achieved a new milestone with 100,000 visitors for the year (Jan-Oct). By December of 2012, carabristol.com garnered 150,000 page views for the year.

May 29, 2013 I did something I’d never done before. I ran a substantial excerpt from an unedited WIP in a brand new genre. Before this time,  it was my personal policy to not run unedited excerpts. But doing so introduced Breeder to the world, and I believe, played a large part in the success of the book. (Another part of its success was the huge support I received from the author community) Breeder has since surpassed Unexpected Consequences as my most successful (profitable) book to date.

September 2013 I had 10,000 visitors in a single month for the first time.

April 9, 2014 I added a widget to allow visitors to sign up to receive email notification of my blog posts. (It’s in the sidebar!)

May 22, 2014 “Why some books sell and others don’t” became my most popular blog post ever with 2,384 hits that day (without being “chrossed”) and 95 comments (about half were my responses to comments). Between that blog, and the next day’s on promotion, tips learned from RT, I doubled my number of blog subscribers to 200. Due to those two blogs, I ended the month with 14,167 visits and 21,409 page views.

July 28, 2014 Melissa Weeks posted the 10,000th comment on my blog!

December 11, 2014 The 1000th blog!

What’s next? Well, I expect that late  in 2015, I will get my 500,000th visitor, and possibly my 1 millionth page view. When that happens, of course, there will be a prize!

But, I realize 259 blogs in a year (and the year isn’t over yet) is WAY too much, even though some posts were guest blogs I didn’t write. A good number were weekend snippet hops. For a while I posted a different excerpt for Saturday Spankings and Weekend Writing Warriors, I’ve since started posting one blog for both.

Time spent blogging is time not spent writing books. And my 200 blog subscribers probably don’t want to receive 5 emails a week from me. So in 2015, I plan to taper off a bit. I may have to go to Bloggers Anonymous.

Yay for reaching 1000! Congrats to Katherine Deane!

I’m in denial so no Bloggers Anonymous for me…yet. 🙂

Great numbers and I found you thanks to Breeder so you did something right there. It’s SUCH a good series!

  2. Congratulations on the 1000th post Cara! I love reading your blog posts – it’s never time wasted so I will miss you not posting as much but understand the time issue.

    • Cara Bristol says:

Thanks, Natasha. I won’t cut back drastically. This year I averaged 5.1 posts per week. I’d like to shoot for 4 posts per week.

  3. Livia Grant says:

Congratulations! What a great achievement. I know I’m responsible for a lot of those views and comments as a long time fan. Congrats to Katherine too on the win.

  4. Sue Lyndon says:

Happy 1000 blog posts, Cara! That’s amazing! And congrats to Katherine:)

  5. S.J. Maylee says:

Wow! 1,000. Congratulations, Cara. I’m pretty sure I fell in love with your writing six sentences at a time. I’ve learned a lot from you over the last couple of years. I can’t thank you enough for sharing what you’ve learned. You’re an inspiration to me.

    • Cara Bristol says:

Thank you so much, SJ. That means a lot to me. I’ve been doing the weekend snippet hops for years, beginning with Six Sentence Sunday and when that went away, Weekend Writing Warriors and Saturday Spankings. I’ve gotten to know so many authors and books through those hops. It’s one of the primary ways I discover new books I want to read.

  6. Yay! Thanks so much, Cara 🙂

Congratulations on your 1000th blog post. I can’t even fathom all those visitors in one month.

I totally understand what you say about the blogging vs writing. I am going to try to up my blogging a little bit (mine is pretty sporadic), and cut back on the FB time.

    Good luck this next year.
And congrats on the new Rod and Cane coming up!

    • Jule Kijek says:

Congrats on winning the gift card! Now you can buy the new R&C book!

    • Cara Bristol says:

One reason I blog so much is that I enjoy it. If I wasn’t an author, I would probably still be a blogger. Any social media platform will work for you–if you use it in a way that is effective. The one advantage that blogging has over Facebook is that you’re in control–your number of followers isn’t limited and no one limits how many people see your post or what you can post.

  7. Jule Kijek says:

Hey Cara, Congrats on your 1,000th post. I look forward to reading each new post. Counting down the days till Liz’s story comes out. Well, time to crawl back into the salt mines. (I’m at work now on my break)

  8. Liz Castillo says:

    Wow! 1,000. Congratulations, Cara!!!

    • Cara Bristol says:

Thank you, Liz. The next biggie I’m anticipating is the 500,000th visitor. That won’t be until late next year — or maybe a little longer if I cut back on blogging.

  9. Laurel Lasky says:

That is totally awesome Cara, what a fantastic achievement. I so enjoy reading your blog
    Yay Katherine!

  10. Casey McKay says:

That is quite an accomplishment! Congrats on 1000 posts- I am sure you have many, many more to come!

    • Cara Bristol says:

LOL, Casey! I have NINE more between now and the end of the year. My last blog 2014 will be 4th annual Best Books of the Year Awards. I name my favorites from among all the books I read throughout the year.
