Interview with Lisa Medley, Space Cowboy & Indians, #asteroids #apaches #aliens

Today is release day for Space Cowboys & Indians, a sci-fi adventure romance written by Lisa Medley. I had the privilege of reading it early, and it is AWESOME. It is a fantastic story with engaging characters. If you love sci-fi, don’t miss this one!

Cara Bristol: Tell us a little about Space Cowboys &Indians .

Lisa Medley: Space Cowboys & Indians is a sci-fi adventure romance will elements of time travel, asteroid mining, aliens and Apace Indians.  What could possibly go wrong?

Cara Bristol: Some people love “hard science” sci-fi, while others only want the flavor. Space Cowboys & Indians delivers both. You seem to have real science going on, yet the story is very interesting too. How much research did you have to do, both for the space mining operation and the Apache Indians?

Lisa Medley: I have a six-inch stack of research I’ve printed from the internet on my desk right now. I’ve riffled through it time and again! I also found invaluable information from Mining the Sky by John S. Lewis and The Mescalero Apaches by C.L. Sonnichsen. Honestly, I had very little knowledge of space or what was going on currently in space exploration other than what I’d seen on the news. Once I dove in, I was amazed at the fascinating projects governments and private industry was working on! There’s enough on Twitter alone to keep a girl writing stories for a millennia.

Cara Bristol: What inspired the story?

Lisa Medley: Richard Branson’s Spaceport America and his quest for private space tourism started the ball rolling. I imagined my Branson inspired character as similar to John Hammond, the fictional creator of Jurassic Park. The What-ifs didn’t stop after that. What could possibly go wrong sending civilians into space? Let’s just say, you’ll find out the answer to that question in episode two.

Cara Bristol: Your character, Duncan Janson, did remind me of Richard Branson! What is your thought process like? How do you go about developing a story from beginning to end?

Lisa Medley: I start with a germ of an idea and start asking what if. In the case of SC&I, I heard a story on NPR about the Rosetta mission to harpoon a comet and put a lander on it to explore. Erm…HARPOONING A COMET? Oh. Yeah. I started asking what if and Space Cowboys & Indians came to life.

Cara Bristol: Is there going to be a Space Cowboy’s II?

Lisa Medley: Yes! I foresee several episodes in the near future. I’ve already begun to plot out Episode II. I can’t tell you the title yet, because it will give away too much from SC&I!

Cara Bristol: Whose your favorite character in the book and why?

Lisa Medley: Cole of course. He’s such a smart ass. I tend to like that. I like that a lot.

Cara Bristol: I liked Cole too! When did you know you wanted to be an author? Why is that important to you?

Lisa Medley: Being an author was also in the back of my mind, but I didn’t know if I could really do it. When a friend of mine took a big chance to follow his dream into acting, I was inspired to follow my dream. SC&I is book five. I guess, it worked!

Cara Bristol: Tell us a little about your other books.

Lisa Medley: I have three books out currently in The Reaper Series, a world filled with reapers, demons, angels and witches: Reap & Repent  (Bk1), Reap & Redeem (Bk2) and Reap & Reveal (Bk3). I also have a standalone ghost story out about a hexed Civil War soldier who is reawakened in the 21st century, called Haunt My Heart.

Cara Bristol: What’s next for you?

Lisa Medey: Oh gosh, I’m trying to decide! People are asking for book four of the Reaper Series, but I may have to write Episode II of the Cosmic Cowboys series first. I’m also working on a sooper sekrit short story. Shhhh…no spoilers!

Cara Bristol: Quick five, answer these questions:

In my fridge, you’ll find: lemon wedges

I’ll do anything to avoid: snakes

I can’t live without: chocolate

I wish I knew five years ago: How to build a time machine so I could hit PAUSE on everyone else, ha!

Before company comes, I hide: The pile of clean clothes!

Space Cowboy & Indians blurb

How can the chance of a lifetime go so horribly wrong?

Mining Engineer Cole Hudson signed up for NASA astronaut training, but after washing out short of getting his gold wings, he retreats to Alaska where he stakes out a gold claim. When billionaire entrepreneur Duncan Janson offers him an opportunity to join a mining team on an asteroid, Cole jumps at the chance.

But nothing is as it seems. Former NASA reject and rival classmate, Tessa Hernandez, is also a member of the team, and from the beginning of the mission test flight, things go wrong. They soon discover they’re not the only ones on the asteroid. As they try to escape, they are pulled through a wormhole and back to the early 1800s New Mexico desert where aliens and Apaches may be the least of their problems.

lisa medleyLisa has always enjoyed reading about monsters in love and now she writes about them, because monsters need love too.
She adores beasties of all sorts, fictional as well as real, and has a farm full of them in her Southwest Missouri home, including: one child, one husband, two dogs, two cats, a dozen hens, thousands of Italian bees, and a guinea pig.

She may or may not keep a complete zombie apocalypse bug-out bag in her trunk at all times, including a machete. Just. In. Case.
